Micro Plating
Gold micro plating refers to the process of applying an extremely thin layer of gold—typically measured in microns (millionths of a meter)—onto the surface of another metal or material through electroplating
Key Characteristics:
Thickness: Usually less than 2.5 microns (we often use 3 microns thick). This is much thinner than standard gold plating.
Purpose: Primarily decorative or used in electronics where only minimal conductivity or appearance is required.
Base Metal: The underlying material is often a cheaper metal like copper, nickel, or brass.
Durability: Not very durable; the thin layer wears off more easily than heavier plating or solid gold.
Cost: Much cheaper than thick gold plating or solid gold due to minimal gold usage.
How to Care for Gold Micro Plated Items
1. Avoid Moisture and Chemicals
Keep it dry. Moisture can cause tarnishing and degrade the base metal underneath.
Remove before:
Showering or swimming
Washing hands or dishes
Exercising (sweat is corrosive)
Avoid exposure to: perfumes, lotions, oils, hair sprays, cleaning agents.
2. Clean Gently
Use a soft cloth (like microfiber or jewelry cloth) to wipe after each wear.
For deeper cleaning:
Use warm water + a drop of mild soap
Dip a soft cloth in the soapy water and gently wipe
Do not soak
Pat dry immediately with a clean towel
3. Store Properly
Store in a dry, cool place
Keep in a soft pouch or separate compartment to avoid scratches
Use anti-tarnish paper or silica gel packs in your jewelry box to reduce humidity
4. Handle with Care
Avoid dropping or bending the item
Don’t stack it with other jewelry that could cause abrasion
